The Ministry of Environmental Protection and Energy has issued a decision to commence remediation of the site contaminated by illegally deposited and buried waste. This refers to the site in the area of the former Kukalj quarry, located in the municipality of Benkovac. This measure is part of a series of steps taken by the state to address the issue of illegal waste disposal at this location.
According to available information, the site currently holds at least 6.427 tons of waste. It is important to note that this is mixed waste, which includes stone and construction materials. The final quantities and exact types of waste will be determined during the implementation of the remediation process. The remediation involves the excavation and removal of waste, with the waste to be subsequently buried in a designated landfill.
The implementation of the remediation is carried out by the Environmental Protection Fund on behalf of the Republic of Croatia. The Ministry coordinates the entire process, cooperating with the relevant authorities, the city of Benkovac, and the Zadar County. During the duration of the remediation, continuous monitoring of ground and surface waters, as well as air quality, will be conducted to ensure environmental protection and public health.
The state will take all necessary measures to ensure that the costs of the remediation are recovered from the responsible party. This step is part of a broader set of measures the state is taking to address environmental pollution and ensure protection for future generations.
