The 35th anniversary of the city was marked in Šibenik over the past week. The central event in a series of activities dedicated to this anniversary included various cultural and ceremonial elements. Organisers stated that the programme covered a wide range of activities, supported by the local community and relevant associations. The main reason for the commemoration remains the remembrance of the defence of the city in 1991, when Šibenik was exposed to intense attack from land, sea, and air.
One of the key points of the programme was the opening of the Homeland War memorial room. This institution, managed by the Veterans' Centre, was open to visitors during the commemoration, specifically from 14 to 18 September 2026. Visitors were able to view historical documents and artefacts testifying to the unyielding struggle for freedom and independence. The programme reopened for visits on 21 September, from 09:00 to 11:00.
As part of the commemoration, a maritime element was present on the Šibenik riviera. A Croatian Navy ship was present, highlighting the significance of the maritime component in the city's defence. Alongside the technical display, attendees emphasised the importance of the historical context. These elements, combined with cultural content, created a solemn atmosphere appropriate for remembering the sacrifices and the glory of the Croatian victory.
The cultural part of the programme also included performances by musical groups, including a concert on the main city square. These events, including those that attracted a large number of visitors, concluded with a solemn programme on 22 September. This symbolically closed the week dedicated to remembering the difficult days of the past, with an emphasis on preserving the memory of shared history.
