The California bald eagle Jackie died on Monday at the age of 14. The death occurred after weeks of intensive veterinary care, with the official cause of death listed as a mysterious illness. Jackie was under the care of the Ojai Raptor Center, which works with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
The eagle died after being attacked by two younger eagles in mid-July. After a fight, she was found weak and unable to fly. Experts diagnosed severe anaemia in her and noted significant weight loss. It is believed the eagle had been ill for weeks prior to the attack.
Jackie gained worldwide popularity thanks to a live stream from the Big Bear Eagle Nest, managed by the non-profit Friends of Big Bear Valley. This stream was followed by millions of viewers worldwide, with Jackie and her partner Shadow as a couple since 2018.
The eagle was hatched in spring 2012, meaning at the time of her death she had reached full maturity for her species. Her death has caused sadness among nature lovers who have followed her life and mating through online streams for years.
