Iran on Tuesday evening launched an attack on US forces in the Middle East by firing multiple ballistic missiles. According to the military, this was a surprise attack that interrupted a brief truce in the escalation between the two countries. The attack occurred at 17:45 Eastern Time, which corresponds to 23:45 Croatian time.
The US Central Command (Centcom) stated that all launched projectiles were successfully intercepted. Although it was confirmed that the defence was effective, the command did not release details on the specific locations targeted by the Iranian missiles. The military further stated that the attacks on their forces were not successful in causing damage or achieving strategic objectives.
In response to the escalation, US and Saudi forces carried out attacks on targets in Iraq. These strikes were carried out in response to previous drone attacks, which Centcom stated were directed from Iran. The attacks in Iraq, which took place on 28 July, targeted terrorist groups linked to Iran.
According to information from Centcom, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard ordered attacks on US forces and Saudi Arabian energy infrastructure. This exchange of attacks marks the formal end of the brief ceasefire that was intended to serve as a framework for the return of negotiators to the negotiating table.
Tehran had not officially commented on the recent military actions by the time of this report. The situation on the ground remains tense as both sides have confirmed active participation in a new phase of the conflict, following a failed attempt at diplomatic de-escalation.
