An Apache (AH-64) military helicopter crashed in the US state of Texas, in Bell County, near Fort Hood military base. The accident occurred on Wednesday during a routine training flight as part of a military operation. The helicopter belonged to the aforementioned military base, and the crash happened approximately 100 kilometres north of the Texas capital, Austin.
Two American soldiers were killed in the helicopter crash, with both crew members, namely both pilots, losing their lives. Cliff Coleman, spokesperson for the Bell County Sheriff’s Office, confirmed that both crew members were officially pronounced dead. Fort Hood also confirmed the crash of the AH-64 helicopter and the death of two members of the armed forces.
The helicopter crash caused a fire, which sparked a wildfire in the surrounding area. The fire resulted in the evacuation of several houses in the immediate vicinity of the crash site. Although details regarding the cause of the crash remain unknown, local authorities and the military are active at the scene.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed the accident and the death of two army personnel. Fort Hood has not released the identities of the deceased soldiers, as their families must be notified before this information is made public. Emergency services and the military continue to work on clarifying the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
