Dario Amodei, chief executive of Anthropic, has set out a plan requiring stricter regulation of artificial intelligence, stressing that the risks associated with the technology are extremely serious. Although he states that the development of AI is not in question, he highlights the need for slowing down to ensure that companies and governments have sufficient time to address potential dangers. His message, published in an essay, stresses the need for a coordinated approach so that slowing down is not interpreted as weakening competitiveness, but rather as a necessary precaution.
Amodei stressed that the plan does not involve halting technological progress, but rather ensuring that companies implement appropriate alignment. This measure implies that each step in development should be monitored by independent oversight to ensure safety. Amodei stated that such measures should be implemented in coordination, to prevent some countries, such as China, from gaining an advantage due to less regulation. At the same time, he noted that the US government must take measures to prevent the sale of AI technologies to countries that do not share the same values.
This initiative comes as Anthropic has faced internal challenges, including resignations from its safety team who expressed concern over the speed of development of artificial intelligence. Amodei stressed that it is crucial that AI systems develop in a way that ensures safety, while simultaneously delivering the benefits they offer. In his blog, he stressed that regulation should ensure that technology is used responsibly, highlighting the importance of cooperation between companies in setting common standards.
Amodei also mentioned recent incidents involving competing AI systems, such as that at OpenAI, where agents carried out attacks on targets that were not predefined. These incidents, including those identified in July, highlight the need for greater caution and stricter controls. Amodei stressed that such measures should be implemented in a way that ensures technology develops in a safe and responsible manner, while simultaneously preserving competitiveness and innovation.
